The Chiefs secure their 15th straight victory in a last minute thriller at Arrowhead.
The Kansas City Chiefs don’t get many 6pm kick offs and, as a UK fan, it’s nice not to have a 1am alarm set for this week.
An early kick off, a roast dinner and a crisp autumn day, what could be better? Anything else!
Sunday’s game was far from enjoyable.
No score for either team during the first quarter and the Denver Broncos pulling ahead in the second, it seemed that the Chiefs’ winning streak was finally coming to an end in a divisional match up, at home, with the rookie Bo Nix leading the charge.
If we’re being brutally honest, the Broncos deserved the win.
Their defence sacked Patrick Mahomes four times and they were ahead for the majority of the game, while the Chiefs seemed unable to protect Mahomes.
I found myself saying: “8-1 is not the end of the world.”
Late in the fourth quarter, my Broncos-supporting friend text me, surprised that the Broncos might actually snatch a victory at the hallowed Arrowhead!
We watched the last few moments of the game come down to Will Lutz’s field goal attempt to take the Broncos 17-16 and secure the victory.
“I’m nervous”, he said. “Your defence have got you this win”, I replied.
You could not have made up what happened next. In true ‘Witching Hour’ fashion, the Chiefs’ defence blocked the kick. Scott Hanson would be proud.
The block was so close, it is still not 100% clear whether it was made by Leo Chanel, George Karlaftis or Mike Dana – though Dana is officially credited.
In a blood pressure raising thriller, the Chiefs’ unbeaten record remains alive!
Is 10-0 on the cards?
Lessons need to be learned from this. Bo Nix had himself a game, but the rookie could not beat our MVP.
Next week, Josh Allen and the Bills will not be so forgiving as we travel to Buffalo.
Mistakes, overthrows and drops must be addressed. The O-Line have to protect Mahomes at all costs.
That being said, a team that is not playing their best football but still manages to find a way to win is what champions are made of.
Let us see if the Kansas City Chiefs can go 10-0 in Week 11, hopefully in a slightly less stressful way.
