Green Bay beat the Bears once again – but only just.
Jordan Love is now three wins and zero losses against the Chicago Bears. Two of those wins were convincing – Sunday was not.
The Green Bay Packers had their struggles on both sides of the ball during their enthralling 20-19 victory.
This win keeps them in touch with the Detroit Lions and Minnesota Vikings in the NFC North race.
The win did not come easily, and for the third time in four games, it came down to a field goal.
Offensive bright spots and red zone woes
The offence started brightly. Jordan Love connected with Jayden Reed for a 15-yard touchdown on the opening drive. However, the Packers had their difficulties in the red zone.
Love overthrew Tucker Kraft for an interception and failed to convert a fourth-down run.
Head coach Matt LaFleur’s play-calling was also questionable, opting for a run on a two-point conversion attempt, which could have put the Packers three points ahead.
Defensive struggles against new-look offence
The defence had its own issues. The Chicago Bears replaced offensive coordinator Shane Waldron with Thomas Brown earlier in the week.
Despite facing an offence that had been inefficient in recent weeks, the Packers defence could not contain rookie quarterback Caleb Williams.
Williams used his legs effectively, gaining 70 crucial yards and evading defenders at key moments as the Packers faltered with their tackling.
Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley had previously contained mobile quarterbacks like Kyler Murray and Anthony Richardson. However, this was a new challenge, and ultimately one the Packers defence failed.
On the final drive, the Packers pass rush finally came alive, forcing a 3rd & 20 deep into the Bears own territory. Williams, however, impressed again, marching the Bears into field goal range with some very impressive passes.
Special teams to the rescue
Ultimately, a rare big play by the Packers special teams sealed the victory.
Karl Brooks blocked Cairo Santos’ 46 yard field goal attempt which mean the Bears’ long wait to beat their old rivals continues.
Notable performances
There were positives for the Packers. Jordan Love displayed grit and leadership, especially on several key touchdown drives – running one in himself.
Christian Watson had several impressive deep catches and was one of the Packers’ stars of the game.
Running back Josh Jacobs ran hard all game, gaining 134 total yards and scoring a touchdown.
The Packers offensive line – particularly pass protection – also shone, giving Love the time he needed to succeed.
In the end, it is the same old story – the Packers beat the Bears yet again. It was not a resounding win, but as the old Wisconsin adage goes – the Bears still suck.
