Another let off in Week 13 for Kansas City.
It has taken a few days for the heart rate to return to normal and to really process what happened on Friday night.
To say that the Kansas City Chiefs have been lucky this season is a huge understatement.
While the ‘a win is a win’ mentality is a new favourite among Chiefs Kingdom, I certainly have a few more grey hairs since the beginning of this season!
Where to start with this game? Well, the Chiefs have clinched their playoff spot.
Matthew Wright – in place of the injured Spencer Shrader, in place of the injured Harrison Butker – helped the Chiefs take the lead with a first-quarter field goal from 25 yards.
A second-quarter touchdown from Justin Watson and two second-half field goals gave the Chiefs a fairly comfortable 16- 3 lead over the Las Vegas Raiders at Arrowhead.
Then came Brock Bowers’ touchdown with 1:40 to go in the third quarter and suddenly momentum changed.
The Chiefs inability to handle the Raiders’ defense – including five sacks on Patrick Mahomes – became a very real threat.
An explosive fourth quarter drive from the Raiders saw a 58-yard touchdown from Tre Tucker.
Suddenly every fan in Chief Kingdom was back to the familiar feeling of holding their breath and praying for last minute redemption.
Surely, it was impossible? Not after the blocked field goal that led us to victory against the Denver Broncos?
Another improbable ending
Wait, do not hang up your cleats just yet, boys.
After two chances to seal the win, Raiders fans still had hope as the clock was winding down.
On what would prove to be the final drive, Las Vegas marched 54 yards downfield and into field goal range, trailing by just two points.
In a moment where time seemed to stand still, Raiders centre Jackson Powers-Johnson snapped the ball to quarterback Aidan O’ Connell – who still seemed to be checking out the line up.
The ball bounced off O’Connell’s shoulder, which resulted in a fumble recovered by the Chiefs. It was a botched snap which cost the Raiders the game.
Bewildered Chiefs players looked on.
Travis Kelce marched straight to the locker room without mustering a smile and Patrick Mahomes addressed “too make mistakes” post-game.
With another last-minute victory for the 11-1 Chiefs it does beg the question, just how are the Chiefs going to fix their offense and reach their post season goals?
