Time for Hockenson to make his season debut.
Minnesota Vikings star tight end T.J. Hockenson – who has sidelined since December 2023 – is set to return to the field against the Indianapolis Colts.
At the time of his injury Hockenson was one of the leading tight ends in the league.
Before his 2023 season was unceremoniously cut short due to injury, the former Detroit Lion notched up 960 yards and five touchdowns.
It has been a lengthy period of recovery but according to Hockenson himself he has never been stronger or faster.
A timely return for Hockenson
His return is a timely one, coming at a time when a promising start from the Vikings is in danger of becoming derailed.
After five straight wins to open the season there have been two losses and with them some added scrutiny on quarterback Sam Darnold.
Justin Jefferson would be the number one option on any team and while Jordan Addison has been promising he has not taken the step forward in year two that everyone in Minnesota was hoping for.
Aaron Jones has been a great addition in the backfield but the offense has missed Hockenson and the skillset he brings.
Johnny Mundt and Josh Oliver have been solid if not spectacular as the alternative options, but neither of them can offer the explosivity that Hockenson should bring.
With the speed to get separation from linebackers and the frame to outjump defensive backs, Hockenson is a match-up nightmare for defensive co-ordinators.
When you add in his route running and ability to find the soft spots in zone coverage this could be the missing piece for the Vikings offense.
The Vikings O-line has protected Darnold reasonably well by so far this season, but too many drives have come to and end before they started.
Adding a playmaker who can function as both a safety valve for the quarterback and offer a deep threat could be the missing link.
With the trade for Cam Robinson, a player whose contract expires at the end of the season the Vikings have tipped their hand on their season goals.
There is clearly some belief within the organisation that this group of players can compete.
Tonight we will get a bit more of an insight as to what this offense could be capable of.
