…Or you just might get it.
Sunday night’s battering at the hands of Green Bay provided many Seattle fans with a harsh lesson.
However startlingly green the Seahawks’ uniform combo was last weekend, it became clear the grass is not always greener on the other side.
Several factions of the Seattle faithful have been calling for quarterback Geno Smith to be benched, in favour of Sam Howell.
A knee injury for Smith gave those fans what they had been asking for on Sunday. What ensued was simply a disasterclass.
Howell was sacked four times, while looking lost in the face of constant pressure. He also threw a bad interception and could have had a few more.
The ’12s’ should now have a greater appreciation for the work of Geno Smith this year behind the dreadful Seattle offensive line.
Geno had another bad redzone pick of his own, but at no point this season has he looked as overwhelmed and hapless as Howell did in his appearance.
Howell gained a reputation in Washington for taking too many sacks and attempting risky throws.
These traits were on full display on Sunday as he put up a painful stat line. No touchdowns, one pick, four sacks and a net total of just five yards from almost 20 dropbacks.
Mitigating factors?
The eye test – admittedly through bleary eyes at 4am – did him no more favours.
I will acknowledge the circumstances facing the young signal-caller were far from ideal. Seattle had already been forced to abandon the run game as they trailed the Packers 20-3 in the second half.
Rust was also quite possibly a factor in Howell’s dismal showing. He had not taken meaningful snaps yet this season.
However, the Seahawks often highlight the importance of remaining “poised” in their approach, despite the challenges they face.
Smith has regularly done this in 2024, despite being forced to overcome adversity – some of his own making.
Sunday night’s 30-13 defeat against Green Bay showed Sam Howell is not able to do so at the moment.
If Geno is unavailable at any stage down the stretch, Seattle’s season will likely be over.
