Bills to Pay: A look ahead to Buffalo’s offseason

What might the Buffalo Bills do this off season?

As I enjoy the last of my Christmas leftovers, I cannot help but wonder what might be leftover for the Bills going into the offseason.

Regardless of a deep playoff run or not, Bills general manager Brandon Beane will have some decisions to make this spring and summer and I cannot wait to see how he navigates it.

What questions lie ahead for Beane?

The Bills sit 27th in the NFL in available cap space for 2025 as of this month.

$9.7 million is more space than they started 2024 with, but Beane will need to expand that figure through restructures, bonus conversion and void years.

Von Miller

Beane has heavily invested in the defensive line over the last few years and this shows.

In 2025, according to Spotrac.com, Von Miller will have the second largest cap hit, sitting at just over $23 million.

If the Bills are not confident Miller can return to his previous form in his age 36 season, then maybe releasing the future Hall of Fame edge rusher becomes a consideration? It would save $8.4 million against the cap.

Gregory Rousseau

There is little doubt about Rousseau – he is a stud.

He sets the edge well in the run game and has consistently gotten better over the course of his rookie contract.

He will play 2025 on his fifth year option. That is $13.4 million for the year.

Due to hit free agency in 2026 – the Bills hierarchy will want to ensure that is wrapped up well before training camp.

The Spencer Brown deal got done nice and early and I expect we see Rousseau follow suit.

I would expect a four-year, $25 million annual average value [AAV] – slightly eclipsing the Montez Sweat contract signed last season.

The goodbyes?

Rasul Douglas and Amari Cooper are likely to be priced out of a renewal based on current market value and cap projections.

DaQuan Jones may struggle to vindicate his cap hit of $9.4 million for 2025.

He could well become a cap casualty, freeing up only $1.8 million however.

There are not many Bills that can clear cap space by cutting them – so Beane will have to get his pocket calculator out and the Pegula’s checkbook because the Bills will need to convert non-guarantees into bonuses.

Regardless of how this post-season plays out, Beane and head coach Sean McDermott have sustainably built this roster to succeed for the foreseeable – and that is something to be thankful for in this league.
