The rebuild is taking shape.
With free agency well underway, Jacksonville have been quick to bring in new blood and release veterans to align with Liam Coen’s strategic direction.
Some of these decisions have caused a degree of concern among the fanbase, but I am optimistic that these are the right calls.
Let us take Christian Kirk as an example. Many fans – including myself – were surprised at the decision to trade him, especially to the Texans, an AFC South rival.
Despite having an injury-disrupted season last year, he was one of Lawrence’s most reliable receivers. However, with the need to balance cap space as well as bring in new blood to the franchise, on balance I think this is the right decision.
As fans we only have to look at some of the talent we have signed so far to be optimistic for the start of the 2025 season.
From free agency so far, it is clear that the offensive line is an area of focus to give Lawrence more protection out on the field.
A beefed up O-line will also give him more options to enable the FAST football that Coen wants the Jags to play.
Signings like wide receiver Dyami Brown and tight end Hunter Long are prime examples of this; new versatile options for Jacksonville while freeing up valuable cap space.
One observation about the Jags free agency so far is how offensive orientated it has been. Based on this, I would not be surprised to see Coen and co. focus more on defensive needs within the draft.
As the NFL draft approaches, Jags fans are starting to see the early fruits of the the rebuild.
