The NFL season is now officially over.
With seven months until the players take to the field again, you might be forgiven for thinking that the game would fade quietly into the background, content with letting another sport take its chance on centre stage.
Absolutely no chance. The end of the playing season simply sees attention switch to how teams will prepare and reload so that they are ready to go again come September.
Draft content is now filling timelines aplenty, with the combine just around the corner. Prospects will be graded and assessed, each player looking to realise their NFL dream.
Looking ahead to the draft the Indianapolis Colts hold the 14th overall pick. How they choose to spend it will be a source of great debate for fans over the next couple of months.
Realistically, the Indianapolis Colts have quite a few areas on their roster that need filling this offseason. And it can be difficult this time of year, without fully knowing who is staying, who is being released, who the team may sign in free agency and even whether the team may trade its pick away.
So far most mock drafts seem to have the Colts taking either a much needed tight end, or alternatively adding a safety or cornerback to address some needs in their secondary.
Both areas are in need of addressing this offseason for sure, whether that is through the draft or free agency. Today we will look at a name that appears to be most commonly getting mock drafted for the Colts on offense.
Preparing for War-ren?
That player is Tyler Warren, tight end from Penn State.
An imposing figure standing at 6’6″, his figures in college last year were impressive.
He had 1,233 yards from 104 receptions. Put that in comparison, the Colts entire tight end group combined for 467 yards in the 2024 season. You can see why it is an easy conclusion to see him being picked for Indy. He could transform the room.
As next year is such a crucial year for so many at the Lucas Oil Stadium, adding another weapon for coach Shane Steichen’s offense makes a lot of sense. It should also help quarterback Anthony Richardson to have more help in the middle of the field.
Unfortunately for Chris Ballard, the General Manager for Indianapolis, with stats such as those in college last year, there may well be a team that picks Warren up ahead of the Colts’ 14th pick. Especially as everyone saw the impact of rookie tight end Brock Bowers in Las Vegas last year.
If Warren is off the board, then the general consensus would be to address the defense instead.
Next time, we will take a look at the names that could be in the mix should Indianapolis decide to use the pick on defense instead.
Until then – enjoy the steady increase in draft content!
