A blueprint for greatness.
With the NFL draft just around the corner, Liam Coen and the Jaguars franchise can kick-start the new project over in Jacksonville.
With all coaching positions filled, attention turns to young players that could supercharge them for the next season and beyond.
We have had relative success in the draft before. Needless to mention that we drafted Trevor Lawrence.
In more recent years, Travon Walker and Brian Thomas Jr. have turned into regulars that we can rely on. However, after the latest season producing sub optimal results, it is time to draft players that can elevate us to the next level.
We suffer in three key areas and draft picks to bolster these could set the Jaguars on a pathway to the playoffs.
We are not a bad football team, we just need to play with confidence and address these key weaknesses.
Passing options
Firstly, we have a star quarterback. However, this does not count for much if he does not have passing options.
The standout performer from last draft is, without a doubt, Brian Thomas Jr. He has been electrifying.
Coen’s ambitions to have him on post routes and utilise his speed more is a good decision.
This draft could be a great time to pick another wide receiver to expand the passing options for Lawrence.
Protect the quarterback
Another option would be to pick an offensive lineman to protect Lawrence.
Too many times, we have seen the pocket collapse far too quickly leading to poor decisions and embarrassing mistakes.
Strengthening this area could not only address this weakness but help with running plays.
We have great depth with Travis Etienne Jr. and Tank Bigsby, the main issue has been creating the space for them to make explosive displays and get those crucial first downs.
Defensive aggression
Our defense also needs strengthening.
Far too many times in 2024 we gave up chunks of yards because of our conscious decision to play zone coverage.
We have been too cautious and need to commit to pressure at times in order to avoid predictability.
We have class players like Josh Hines-Allen and Travon Walker in the defensive line. Adding another player of the same calibre would give us more flexibility.
Hopefully, this would lead to more stops which is crucial given how many one-score games we ended up on the losing end of.
The Jaguars rebuild continues.
