More problems to solve.
If you missed part one of this series, then you can read that here first. Now it is time to jump back into the issues facing the Green Bay Packers.
Running back dynamics
Josh Jacobs was the centrepiece of the Packers’ offense in 2024. Strengthening the offensive line would boost his explosiveness, but managing his workload is essential.
There is optimism that 2024 draft pick Marshawn Lloyd, who missed most of the season due to injury, will add an explosive element to the Packers’ running back room in 2025.
With Emmanuel Wilson and AJ Dillon both entering free agency, it is plausible neither will return next season.
Wide receiver challenges
Wide receiver remains an intriguing issue.
The Packers boast a young and talented group, but youth brings inconsistency. Drops, route struggles, and injuries have been recurring problems.
Christian Watson, the Packers’ primary deep threat, is expected to miss most of next season.
Acquiring a bona fide ‘wide receiver one’ would greatly benefit the team. Davante Adams would be an ideal and romantic fit if he were willing to return.
His familiarity with the scheme and proven reliability would significantly aid Love.
Exploring the free agent market, Tee Higgins stands out as a viable option, though likely at a premium price.
The Packers typically draft wide receivers in later rounds. However, if they pursue an early-round receiver, Isaiah Bond [Texas] or Tre Harris [Ole Miss] could be ideal choices to add speed and deep-threat capability.
Tight end stability
Tucker Kraft took a significant leap after his 2023 rookie season and solidified his position as the Packers’ first choice tight end.
Luke Musgrave, a second-round pick in the same class as Kraft, missed most of the 2024 season due to injury. His return, with his remarkable top-end speed for his size, could greatly benefit the Packers next season.
John FitzPatrick and Tyler Davis are the only free agents from this group. Davis failed to see the field, while FitzPatrick’s snaps were limited.
A veteran minimum deal for FitzPatrick might be sensible to maintain depth in the tight end room.
Summary
General manager Brian Gutekunst has set expectations high. The Green Bay Packers face a crucial offseason as they seek to take the leap from a good team to a great team.
While the draft has traditionally been the Packers’ preferred method for bolstering the roster, the additional cap space may lead to a more aggressive approach in free agency to fill key gaps.
