The Vikings proved too much for Green Bay.
The Green Bay Packers’ recent good form came to an abrupt halt against an impressive Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
The Vikings needed a win to set up a final-day showdown with the Detroit Lions for both the NFC North title and the top seed in the NFC.
The Packers, meanwhile, had already secured a playoff spot.
In truth, the game reflected these stakes. The Vikings displayed far more urgency, while the Packers were uncharacteristically sloppy, particularly on offense.
The usually reliable Josh Jacobs set the tone for the Packers’ struggles with a fumble on the opening drive. For three quarters, the offense seemed unable to counter Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores’s well-organised defense.
The game was reminiscent of the Vikings’ 31-29 victory earlier in the season at Lambeau Field. This time, the Vikings led 27-10 before Packers quarterback Jordan Love shifted into gear, rallying his team with 15 unanswered points.
Ultimately, however, the Vikings outplayed the Packers for much of the game and were deserving winners.
Vikings Capitalise on Packers’ Weaknesses
Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell and quarterback Sam Darnold exploited the Packers’ injury-hit secondary, with Darnold throwing for 377 yards and three touchdowns.
Despite conceding 27 points, the Packers’ defense had some bright moments, particularly given the number of absentees. However, the pass rush left much to be desired.
The fourth-quarter fightback highlighted the potential of Love and the Packers’ offense, although the absence of deep-threat receiver Christian Watson was keenly felt.
There was also frustration on the Packers’ sideline when a missed field goal by Vikings kicker Will Reichard was nullified by a questionable offside penalty.
The additional yards allowed Reichard to convert a shorter attempt, gifting the Vikings three points just before halftime.
What comes next?
In reality, a loss would have been harsh on the Vikings, who now have an excellent chance to claim the NFC’s top seed.
For the Packers, attention now turns to a classic divisional showdown with the Chicago Bears.
Securing a victory in that match would provide momentum heading into the playoffs.
