During his first Super Bowl run, Matthew Stafford famously said that football is much more enjoyable when you make a play that “steals somebody’s soul”.
Teammates told him he went to a “dark place” then, and perhaps that happened again last night.
The Los Angeles Rams earned a thrilling 26-20 overtime win over the Seattle Seahawks, with Stafford’s 39-yard pass to Demarcus Robinson sealing the victory.
This marked the Rams’ first road win this season and their third straight victory since the bye.
Things looked bleak for the Rams near the end of the first half.
Wide receiver Puka Nacua was ejected for an altercation with Seahawks cornerback Coby Bryant. A touchdown from Seattle’s Jaxon Smith-Njigba soon followed and the Rams entered the break trailing 13-3.
Stafford’s performance was pivotal, as he tied Eli Manning’s record of 366 career touchdowns.
The Rams’ defense stepped up with seven sacks – led by two from rookie Braden Fiske – and strong contributions from Byron Young, Jared Verse, Kobie Turner, Quentin Lake, Tyler Davis and Michael Hoecht.
A highlight play came from rookie safety Kamren Kinchens, who returned an interception 103 yards for a touchdown — the longest interception return in franchise history.
Seattle forced overtime with a late touchdown pass, but the Rams’ defense made a crucial fourth-and-one stop in the red zone. Four plays later, Stafford delivered a soul-crushing pass to Robinson, ending the game.
Following the game, Rams head coach Sean McVay commented on Puka Nacua’s ejection, saying: “He’ll learn from it. He is exactly the right kind of guy, and this was a learning opportunity.”
The Los Angeles Rams have shifted from soul-searching at a rough 1-4 start to emerging as contenders back in the playoff hunt.
They have won three consecutive games since their bye week, showing defensive grit and offensive resilience.
The Rams will aim to continue their momentum when they host the Miami Dolphins on Monday Night Football at SoFi Stadium.
