Several roster holes need filling.
As the 2025 NFL Draft approaches, the Miami Dolphins are looking to build again, as one of the top contenders in the AFC.
After a season that saw flashes of brilliance but ultimately fell way short of expectations, the Dolphins must now focus on strategic roster upgrades to make that next leap forward.
With an exciting offensive core and a defense capable at times of being elite, their draft needs should focus on reinforcing areas that will push them to be competitive with the elite AFC teams.
1. Offensive/Defensive line
A key priority for Miami is strengthening the offensive line.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa has shown that when given protection, he can be a game-changer, but the line has been inconsistent.
Protecting Tua is paramount, especially given his injury history. The Dolphins could look for a plug-and-play offensive tackle, preferably one who has the versatility to play both sides.
A dominant tackle in the early rounds would provide immediate stability and long-term security for the offense. Adding a defensive tackle – if as suspected Calais Campbell moves elsewhere – would be prudent, even if the criminally under rated Zach Sieler continues at All Pro level for another season.
2. Running back depth
While the Dolphins’ offense thrives through the air, having a reliable ground game to balance the attack is crucial.
Raheem Mostert is gone and De’Von Achane is now the primary ball-carrier. A power back who can move the chains and keep opposing defenses honest would elevate Miami’s offensive scheme.
With a draft class featuring several talented running backs, this could be an area where the Dolphins look to secure a future star. In particular one who can handle a full workload if needed, given the fact Achane and Jaylen Wright are smaller backs.
3. Cornerback
Defensively, the Dolphins potentially have an impressive pass rush, but their secondary has at times struggled to match the pressure.
Cornerback remains a significant need for the team. They already have standout talent in the secondary, but adding another dynamic, ball-hawking corner to pair with Jaylen Ramsey would make the defense much more formidable.
A corner capable of both shadowing top receivers and forcing turnovers would elevate the entire unit, particularly in an AFC that features potent passing attacks.
4. Linebacker
The linebacker position also requires attention. While the Dolphins have had solid performances from their linebackers, they lack a true, game-changing presence in the middle.
A linebacker with a strong ability to cover the field, make tackles in space, and rush the passer could be invaluable.
This position may not be as pressing as others, but addressing it could create one of the more well-rounded defenses in the league.
In conclusion, with a good draft, Miami has the potential to address their biggest needs and continue building a roster capable of competing in the AFC.
