It had been expected. It still hurts.

The Seahawks decided to move on from franchise legend Tyler Lockett this week.

The choice to release the veteran wide receiver made sense from a financial standpoint. Cutting the fan favourite created around £17 million in cap space.

It had been expected. It still hurts.

Production

Lockett ranks second in Seahawks history for receptions, receiving yards and touchdowns, behind only the great Steve Largent.

He surpassed 1,000 receiving yards four times in Seattle.

Lockett was selected for the Pro Bowl and All-Pro First Team in his rookie year for his punt returning abilities. His connection with Russell Wilson then began to flourish as the diminutive talent became a truly elite receiver.

He regularly hauled in Wilson’s picture-perfect deep passes, often defying the laws of physics to keep his toes in-bounds.

An impressive – if under-appreciated – aspect of Lockett’s consistency is the success he had in Seattle after Wilson departed. When Geno Smith took over the Seahawks’ starting job, Lockett remained a reliable and consistent contributor.

Highlights

The mercurial pass-catcher had a knack for stepping up when it mattered most for Seattle.

His first punt return in the NFL was taken back 57 yards for a touchdown. He also notched a kick return touchdown in his rookie season.

Clashes with the Cardinals often seemed to bring out the best in Lockett. When the teams met in 2020, he torched Arizona to the tune of 200 yards and three touchdowns.

Arguably Lockett’s best catch in a Seattle uniform was an incredible toe-tapping TD grab against the LA Rams in 2019. He also had a walk-off overtime touchdown in 2023 against the high-flying Detroit Lions.

However impressive Lockett’s achievements were on the field in Seattle though, he made an even bigger impact off it.

Character

Tyler Lockett has been the Seahawks’ nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award twice.

He is a three-time winner of the Steve Largent Award. This is given each season to the player who best represents the spirit, dedication and integrity of the Seahawks.

Lockett has been adored by coaches and teammates alike throughout his time in the Pacific Northwest.

They have been quick to pay tribute to him as he says farewell to Seattle:

As a player and a role model, Seattle has much to thank Lockett for over the last decade.
